[OOM] Days Fifty-Eight to Sixty-Five

Day Fifty-Eight.

Mog’s busy acquiring the last few parts for the training robot, so Eden catches the tram along the wall first thing in the morning, gets off at the stop closest to Vulpes, and walks the rest of the way.

Much like Leopardos is situated above a library, Vulpes is situated amidst a small cluster of eateries and shops -- were it not for how far away it was from the centre of town, it could have easily been Daybreak Town’s social hub.

“Eden, right?”

Eden turns towards the voice, and finds Master Ava standing behind him, dressed in her distinctive pink robes, her hands clasped lightly behind her back. She definitely was not there a moment ago, he would’ve noticed -- although, he supposed nobody noticed her watching in the waterways.

“You remember me,” Eden says, wryly.

“Of course,” Master Ava chirps. “I’d hardly forget the thief who stole from Aced, right? You’re not casing Vulpes to see if you can steal anything from us, are you?” Her tone is playful enough that Eden can tell that’s not a question that’s meant to be answered.

“I wanted to find somebody to give me some tips and training,” Eden says, instead. “You know, ‘cause Master Gula’s so wrapped up in his books.”

Master Ava cocks her head, regarding him for a moment. “Light magic, right? I’ve got a student called Prishe who uses it as well, but I don’t think she’d want to train you. She’s not the gentle teacher type.”

Eden rolls his shoulders into a dramatic slump, grimacing. “Guess I’m headed over to Unicornis, then.”

Master Ava hides a quick laugh behind her hand, and shakes her head. “Or you could come by the beach park tomorrow morning. You’re not the only keybearer who wants to train outside your Union, you know,” she says. “Five in the morning, sharp, or we’ll start without you.”

Day Fifty-Nine.

Eden’s up before the sun switches on, catching a tram to the southerly side of the city, and making his way to the edge of the wall and through the gate, to the craggy outcropping of rock and sand that forms the beach park.

There are about a dozen keybearers hanging around, but Eden doesn’t recognise most of them: There’s a boy with blond hair and a black and white jacket chatting to a boy with shaggy, dark hair and a feather in his hat; a girl with short black hair and a pink hat with frog ears on them; a girl with a huge white afro and circular spectacles; and a gaggle of others milling around.

Eden does recognise one -- the red-haired boy from Ursus, who he’s seen hanging around Mateus more than once, is sat with his hat tipped over his eyes.

He meanders over, stuffing his hands in his pockets, and he gives the red-haired boy his biggest grin.

“Hey! Should I be worried that Mateus is going to show up and ruin everything?” Eden asks. “I think this might be the first time I’ve seen you without him.”

“We’re not attached at the hip, don’t you worry,” the red-haired boy says, wryly. “I’m sure dear old Mateus would never dream of lowering himself to asking the Foreteller of Vulpes for help.”

“Why are you here, then? Aren’t you, like, in the top dormitory of the top Union? D’you really need extra training?”

“Oh, but I never turn down an opportunity to learn,” says the red-haired boy, flashing teeth momentarily. “I’ve already learned so much just by watching you in your little altercations with Mateus.”

Eden doesn’t have a chance to say anything else, because Master Ava arrives at that moment, her Foreteller’s Text under one arm. She organises them all into groups, and training begins, as she moves from group to group.

Eden finds himself working with the girl with the pink hat, and Ava’s quick to put him to work on refining his speed ability: Focusing the boost to just his feet and shoulders when he wants to move quickly, so that he can use more power and push his speed to new levels; changing the direction of the boost to glide in a different direction at a moment’s notice, even if the sudden shift in momentum does make him feel like his teeth are going to be liquified; focusing the boost onto just his arm to strike with enough speed and force to create vortices of wind.

In time, Ava says, they’ll concentrate on using his magic to create constructs: Simple ones at first, then more complicated ones, like the intricate magical circles a non-keyblade using mage might use to cast a spell. For now, though, she focuses entirely on having him hone his boost spell, increasing its strength and weaponising it.

The training’s over all too quickly, but Ava tells them to return the next morning.

Days Fifty-Nine to Sixty-Five.

Eden visits the beach park every morning. He doesn’t see the red-haired boy again, but he sees new people, and the faces he recognises from that first day show up every few days.

Master Ava seems somewhat approving of his commitment. She keeps working with him, helping him refine his boost magic. By the end of the morning of the sixty-fifth day, Eden’s learned that he can fire off multiple rapid-fire boosts from his heels, draining his energy fast and making control a risky proposition, but pushing his speed to the point where he can nearly be in multiple places at once.

Master Ava also hands him a note with three or four book titles written on it. All of them, Eden suspects, are in the Leopardos library.

“None of these are about Light magic,” he points out.

“Light magic’s powerful, but it’s not very versatile,” Master Ava says. “But Time, Thunder, and Wind magic all sit pretty close to it. Chances are good you’ll have an affinity for one of them, even if you’ll never be as adept as a natural user of any of them. But the more you learn, the more you can combine with your natural magic.”

Huh. Guess I’ve got some reading to do.”
