[OOM] Day Fifty-Five: I steal only what I can't afford (that's everything)

“You can put me down now, really,” Eden says, when they’re a little way out into the desert. Aladdin seems relieved -- probably, Eden reflects, because he’s heavy -- and sets him down on the sand.

Eden takes a moment to find his footing, then stands, touching one hand to his collarbone, gingerly. His jacket and t-shirt have a ragged hole ripped in them, and are half soaked through with blood, but beneath that, the skin and blood of the wound have already turned to white crystal.

“Is that normal?” Aladdin asks.

“Sure! Probably,” Eden says. “Hey, Freyra, how’s Alvis?”

“He’ll be fine with a bit of healing magic,” Freyra says. “What about you?”

“My face hurts and I’ve got a hole in my chest,” Eden says, flatly, rubbing at the crystal coating on his wound. “I’m coping with it. It’s all cool. And I guess we technically escorted you both out of the city, right?”

The old man nods quickly. “Thank you so much for your kindness, young man. I do hope those other children don’t cause you trouble.”

“Yeah, thanks,” Aladdin says. “Hey, if you’re ever back in Agrabah, come find me. Maybe I’ll be a prince!”

Eden cracks a quick grin, and turns his head a little. “Chirithy?”

Chirithy materialises in a flicker of smoke. “You called for me?”

“Can you prepare us a way back to Daybreak Town?”

“Immediately.”

Chirithy vanishes.

Aladdin furrows his brow in confusion a little, then looks towards the old man. “Oh, I’ll go find you a horse or a camel. You can’t walk all the way through the desert.”

“Alvis and I will help!” Freyra chirps, readjusting Alvis on her back and hurrying after Aladdin as he heads towards a copse of palm trees near the gate, where various traders have tethered their animals in the shelter the trees provide.

Eden watches them go, then settles his hands behind his head, giving the old man a bright grin. “Looks like we both get what we want, Jafar.”

The old man gives him a watery-eyed, dumbfounded look, before dropping the act, straightening up. “How did you know?”

“Al over there didn’t know about Daybreak Town at all. You and Jasmine both did,” Eden says. “Imagine how shocked I was when some old bread thief knew just by looking at us that we were keybearers of Daybreak Town.”

Jafar makes an amused noise in the back of his throat. “And you didn’t think to tell Aladdin?”

“He’ll find out sooner or later, I’m sure,” Eden says, waving a hand. “And besides, I got what I wanted: The results of that little experiment.”

So glad I could help. And what did you find?”

“That someone is directing those Darkballs, and dispersing them across the worlds,” Eden says. “Someone who told you that we would be coming here.”

“If you expect me to tell you who, I’m afraid you’re sadly mistaken. I have no idea as to my dear benefactor’s identity,” Jafar replies. “Terribly sorry to disappoint.”

“Ah, I’ll live,” Eden chirps. “You and Aladdin have fun getting that treasure, okay?”

He sees Aladdin hurrying back, and Freyra a little way behind him, so he raises a hand, jogging in Freyra’s direction. He feels a sudden weight on his head as Chirithy appears, settling into his hair.

“That man is a problem,” Chirithy murmurs.

“One we’ll have to deal with eventually,” Eden agrees. “But not today.”

Chirithy shifts slightly, and Eden slaps a grin onto his face, stretching his shoulders. “Besides, man, Al needs that treasure! I bet there are a ton of cool rocks in that cave.”

“Probably.”
